It's funny how people have such short memories. The real 'axis of evil' (US, UK + Israel), lied through their teeth, about the activities of, and the threat from, Iraq. The media repeated the lies unchallenged and we unleashed unholy hell in Iraq.

How can it be that the same people, now spouting their opinion that Iran is now a threat, despite their track record for unashamed, untruthfulness and complete disregard for the lives of innocent foreigners, are being taken seriously, as if there is not even the slightest possibility that we are being spun a yarn again.

To anyone with any knowledge of what the middle east looks like, (probably not your average Joe Six-Pack), it is obvious that the locations of the last 2 wars and this new prospective one, are classic strategic moves in a big chess game for US domination in the middle east. Anyone that has played the board game, Risk, cannot fail to notice the convenience of the way the War on Terror has played out:

No more killing.

No more expenditures of almost $6 billion per month on this tragic war.

No more denial of health care coverage for over 42 million Americans, when we are paying more for this outrageous war than what it would cost for universal health care throughout the US.

No more dependence on foreign oil, while we could become independent if we focused resources wasted in the Iraq war on clean, renewable sources of energy.

No more sending people off to be held and interrogated in countries where torture and brutality is expected to occur.

No more arrogant, blundering, incompetent leadership of our military.

Which means no more Donald Rumsfeld.

No more manipulation of our media.

No more arrogance and incompetence posing as leadership in the White House.

Which means no more Bush and Cheney!

We are gathered here today because we care deeply. We are gathered today because we can’t – and won’t – remain silent in the face of tragic dishonesty, tragic violations of international law and human rights, outrageous war mongering, and continually shifting excuses for beginning the war – a war that has resulted in the unnecessary deaths of probably more than 100,000 Iraqis and almost 2400 American members of the United States armed forces. Add to that tragedy the terrible injuries sustained by tens of thousands of people, and our nation’s conscience will forever be shocked and burdened.

We are not gathered because we are Democrats or Republicans or Greens or Independents or members of any other party.

We are not even because we are disgusted with the complacency, impotence, and timidity of so many so-called “leaders” in both of the major parties.

We are not gathered here because we seek to divide this nation. In fact, we seek to unify this great country behind principles of justice, compassion and an end to an outrageous, unnecessary war.

And we are not here because we are “nut cakes.”

There are those who have said, “Stand behind our Presid ent, right or wrong.” They say, “We are duty-bound to follow and support them.”

We are gathered here today to insist there are much higher authorities than George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and Donald Rumsfeld to whom we must listen for moral guidance.

Those who say we should blindly follow our governmental leaders are calling for no less than shameful individual moral abdication.

Never has so much evil been perpetuated than from following that call. A culture of blind obedience is a culture of immorality.

Nazi Germany was a society comprised of millions of people who did not question and who did not object. They followed. They followed blindly. They left it for their leaders to make the decisions – even the decisions as to what each individual would do, including the most inhumane treatment toward other people.

That culture of blind obedience was not one where most people asked themselves, “What should I do?”. The answers were already furnished by leaders bent on world domination – leaders who thought nothing of torturing, killing, and maiming millions of innocent men, women, and children.

People were not gathering together to say “No more.” Rather, they were calling out “Heil Hitler,” abdicating to political leaders the moral choices they each could have – and should have – made as individuals. In short, they forfeited the most important part of what makes each of us human.

We are gathered here to assert our moral autonomy – our moral power – our moral insistence that we will not be a part of the dishonesty, the brutality, and the hypocrisy behind the current war of aggression. And we will call out together for an end to the insanity – an end to the obscenity – known as the Iraq war.

At times like this, silence is complicity. Silence is an affirmation of the status quo. We will only see change when the people assert their own moral authority – and no longer leave it to the self -serving, shiftless, sycophantic servants of the corporate rapists and pillagers of our people, like Dick Cheney’s buddies at the sole-source-contracts-in-Iraq-profiteer Halliburton; like Exxon, the plunderer of almost every person in our nation; and like the pharmaceutical companies and insurance companies that have made certain the American people do not have affordable, universal health care coverage.

Rwanda was a culture of blind obedience. Tens of thousands of people heeded the call to slaughter their Tutsi and moderate Hutu neighbors, most of whom used machetes to hack men, women, and children to death. These were not people who asserted their personal moral authority. Instead, they betrayed their role as moral actors – as what most fundamentally makes a person a human being, by blindly following those who said, “Go kill the cockroach Tutsis.” As a result, 800,000 people were slaughtered, while our nation, while the United Nations, while the international community, which had been so hypocritically smug in insisting “Never again” since the Holocaust, turned a blind eye to the Rwandan genocide.

We are gathered here today to say no more will we stand by.

No more can any person asserting free agency stand by in good conscience.

No more will we abandon moral decision-making to so-called political authorities.

Let us each embrace our moral authority, let us each embrace our humanity, let us each embrace our responsibility – and insist in every way within our means: No more human and civil rights violations; no more hatred and inhumane treatment toward hard-working immigrants and their families; no more killing and maiming. No more Iraq war.

A Government Whistleblower Reveals the Real Agenda Behind ID Cards

I started this post in January, but put it on a backburner. A disturbing email I received today has just revived it. The email contains new shocking and sinister revelations about the Government's proposed security measure. The sender apparently works in a UK government department and they provided a telephone number. I called the number and confirmed this person does work for the named office. I have as yet, been unable to speak to the sender, but will continue attempts to do so, and post any updates.

The impractical and unnecessary scheme, which has the potential for extreme abuse is being doggedly pushed through Parliament, despite being defeated numerous times, and receiving overwhelming critism from its opponents. The Government's persistance is worrying, seeing as the drawbacks far outweigh the proposed benefits.

On the Home Office website, they describe what type of data will be on the cards, and assurances are given regarding the threat to our privacy. However, they then contradict themselves on the very next page, when describing what needs to be finalised before the cards are made law. In a list of considerations comes: specifying the types of information that will be held in the National Identity Register and agreeing safeguards to protect the register. SO the type of data to be stored is, by no means finalised, and the data is by no means secure.

I did have quite a bit more to say on the issue, but this email, pretty much covers it all, and it is a shocking read:

PLEASE READ, THIS AFFECTS EVERYBODY...

You may have heard that legislation creating compulsory ID Cards passed a crucial stage in the House of Commons. You may feel that ID cards are not something to worry about, since we already have Photo ID for our Passport and Driving License and an ID Card will be no different to that. What you have not been told is the full scope of this proposed ID Card, and what it will mean to you personally.

The proposed ID Card will be different from any card you now hold. It will be connected to a database called the NIR, (National Identity Register), where all of your personal details will be stored. This will include the unique number that will be issued to you, your fingerprints, a scan of the back of your eye, and your photograph. Your name, address and date of birth will also obviously be stored there. There will be spaces on this database for your religion, residence status, and many other private and personal facts about you.

There is unlimited space for every other detail of your life on the NIR database, which can be expanded by the Government with or without further Acts of Parliament.

By itself, you might think that this register is harmless, but you would be wrong to come to this conclusion. This new card will be used to check your identity against your entry in the register in real time, whenever you present it to 'prove who you are'.

Every place that sells alcohol or cigarettes, every post office, every pharmacy, and every Bank will have an NIR Card Terminal, (very much like the Chip and Pin Readers that are everywhere now) into which your card can be 'swiped' to check your identity. Each time this happens, a record is made at the NIR of the time and place that the Card was presented. This means for example, that there will be a government record of every time you withdraw more than £99 at your bank - who now demand ID for these transactions. Every time you have to prove that you are over 18, your card will be swiped, and a record made at the NIR. Restaurants and off licenses will demand that your card is swiped so that each receipt shows that they sold alcohol to someone over 18, and that this was proved by the access to the NIR, indemnifying them from prosecution.

Private businesses are going to be given access to the NIR Database. If you want to apply for a job, you will have to present your card for a swipe. If you want to apply for a London Underground Oyster Card, or a supermarket loyalty card, or a driving license you will have to present your ID Card for a swipe. The same goes for getting a telephone line or a mobile phone or an internet account.

Oyster, DVLA, BT and Nectar (for example) all run very detailed databases of their own. They will be allowed access to the NIR, just as every other business will be. This means that each of these entities will be able to store your unique number in their database, and place all your travel, phone records, driving activities and detailed shopping habits under your unique NIR number.

These databases, which can easily fit on a storage device the size of your hand, will be sold to third parties either legally or illegally. It will then be possible for a non governmental entity to create a detailed dossier of all your activities. Certainly, the government will have clandestine access to all of them, meaning that they will have a complete record of all your movements, from how much and when you withdraw from your bank account to what medications you are taking, down to the level of what sort of bread you eat - all accessible via a single unique number in a central database.

This is quite a significant leap from a simple ID Card that shows your name and face.

Most people do not know that this is the true character and scope of the proposed ID Card. Whenever the details of how it will work are explained to them, they quickly change from being ambivalent towards it.

The Government is going to compel you to enter your details into the NIR and to carry this card. If you and your children want to obtain or renew your passports, you will be forced to have your fingerprints taken and your eyes scanned for the NIR, and an ID Card will be issued to you whether you want one or not. If you refuse to be fingerprinted and eye scanned, you will not be able to get a passport. Your ID Card will, just like your passport, not be your property. The Home Secretary will have the right to revoke or suspend your ID at any time, meaning that you will not be able to withdraw money from your Bank Account, for example, or do anything that requires you to present your government issued ID Card.

The arguments that have been put forwarded in favor of ID Cards can be easily disproved. ID Cards will not stop terrorists; every Spaniard has a compulsory ID Card as did the Madrid Bombers. ID Cards will not 'eliminate benefit fraud', which in any case, is small compared to the astronomical cost of this proposal, which will be measured in billions according to the LSE. This scheme exists solely to exert total surveillance and control over the ordinary free British Citizen, and it will line the pockets of the companies that will create the computer systems at the expense of your freedom, privacy and money.

If you did not know the full scope of the proposed ID Card Scheme before and you are as unsettled as I am at what it really means to you, to this country and its way of life, I urge you to email or photocopy this and give it to your friends and colleagues.

The Bill has proceeded to this stage due to the lack of accurate and complete information on this proposal being made public. Hand to hand, we can inform the entire nation if everyone who receives this passes it on.

One day we will realize that Bush was far more honest to the public than we gave him credit for. True, he is delusional and deadly, but when he speaks to you and tells you things like "we won't cut and run on my watch," he means it. He means that as long as you are afraid to impeach him, he will keep his war going. And no matter what happens to our troops, he will keep them in harm's way. That is just who the man is, and he tells you so.

When Bush says "I get up every day and think of how to protect America—every day" he means it. The first thoughts in this man's dawn-pure mind are not of sunrise, calm, or the simple, nameless thrill of gratitude for one more day alive. The first thoughts in this poor man's mind are those of death, bombs, spies, and lurkers. The lost soul is paranoid, terrorized, and exists in an utter state of negativity. He projects his inner chaos upon the world, and magnifies what is there by horrifying degrees. George W. Bush's vision for the future is one of fear, martial might, and unchecked Executive power. Sound familiar?

When Bush implies with his banners and speeches that the Mission is Accomplished, he means it. He has achieved what he set out to achieve. He walks with the pride of a man who has reached his goals. He wanted to stage a hostile takeover of the America Corporation Conglomerate, and he did. He wanted to steal the election, and he did. He wanted to Bomb Iraq before he ever wedged his Connecticut-Cowboy posterior into the throne, and he did. In fact, Mister Bush does whatever he wants. Just like the little, spoiled, rich boy that he always will be.

When Bush says that he has been spying on Americans, and that he intends to keep doing it, he means every word. Nothing he signs, nothing Congress says, and nothing you type into your little keyboard or fax to your Senator will change that. He intends to keep doing it, and he will.

When Bush tells you that he doesn't feel he has to answer to you, that he doesn't pay attention to the polls, or that he doesn't feel Congress' approval is necessary, he means it. He does not see himself as a "President." The man has no respect at all for the office of President. He has no Old Glory sewn into his soul, no shining Ideals behind his battallions. Despite his empty rhetoric. Those are just soundbites for the camera and the history books. Those words are advertising. To Bush, this game is just one more company to be milked, one more deal to be bilked, one more gambit to be run. His sunbeam rug holds more reverence in his heart than do the near-sacred walls and traditions of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

When Bush says that God told him to bring Freedom and War to the Middle East, he means every word. When he talks about the Bad Guys (I thought we stopped talking like this in grade school) and the Evil-doers, he is not using shorthand. He perceives in shorthand. And if we choose to ignore the language of Crusade, Cleansing, and Inquisition, we should not blame him for our trepidation. He is not afraid to confess to slightly deranged cognitive processes, why on Earth are we afraid to confront them?

Let's not misplace our anger. Let's not get riled when the man asserts that "no president wants to go to war." I think we can all agree on that! No president does. What harm is there in Bush saying what we all know to be true? Bush, who was never legally elected, is not our President. He is the self-authored sequel to the Nuremberg Trials. And he has always wanted to go to war. In fact, it is the only thing he wants to do. This is why his "Presidency" will see war after war after war, if we remain docile. Iraq will not be the end, nor will Iran. I promise you. This man needs war like a junkie needs a fix. In fact, war is George W. Bush's current drug of choice, to use the proper parlance. Why would he drink? He's moved on to murkier spirits.

Don't get me wrong: Bush lies. In fact, one could safely say that Bush is a lie, such is the screaming paradox between who he purports to be by design, and who he is by deed. As we all know, a man is judged on his deeds. The problem is not that Bush lies. The problem is that we let him get away with it. The Press, Congress, and far too many who have power accept what he does because either they, too, see through a lens of fear, or because their cake is sugared with Bush's shrapnel.

But again: let's not pin too much hostility on Mister Bush. He is usually telling us his truth. We are afraid to hear it for what it is. But at least he is gracious enough to swagger and preen, in recognition of his feat. I suppose it is the only form of gratitude this man is capable of communicating sincerely. At at least he doesn't hide his happiness.

And after all, you have to admit: You may not like war without end, spying on citizens, the negation of our most beloved ideals, or torture, but at least you know that George W. Bush stands for it.

Death raises concern at police tactics

The recent killing of an unarmed Virginia doctor has raised concerns about what some say is an explosion in the use of military-style police Swat teams in the United States.

Armed with assault rifles, stun grenades - even armoured personnel carriers - units once used only in highly volatile situations are increasingly being deployed on more routine police missions.

Dr Salvatore Culosi Jr had come out of his townhouse to meet an undercover policeman when he was shot through the chest by a Special Weapons and Tactics force.

It was about 2135 on a chilly January evening. The 37-year-old optometrist was unarmed, he had no history of violence and displayed no threatening behaviour.

But he had been under investigation for illegal gambling and in line with a local police policy on "organised crime" raids, the heavily armed team was there to serve a search warrant.

As officers approached with their weapons drawn, tragedy struck. A handgun was accidentally discharged, fatally wounding Dr Culosi.

Two months on, investigations into the incident are still continuing, a delay which Dr Culosi's family says is compounding the "horror and burden of it all".

Salvatore Culosi Sr, the dead man's father, told the BBC: "I never knew him to carry so much as a pocket knife so it bewilders me how a detective could spend three months investigating my son and not know he is a pussy cat.

"If anything comes out of this it must be that another family does not experience this pain and anguish for absolutely no reason.

"Policy needs to change so these kinds of accidents never occur again."

'Excessive force'

Professor Peter Kraska, an expert on police militarisation from Eastern Kentucky University, says that in the 1980s there were about 3,000 Swat team deployments annually across the US, but says now there are at least 40,000 per year.

"I have no problem with using these paramilitary style squads to go after known violent, armed criminals, but it is an extreme tactic to use against other sorts of suspects," he said.

Dr Kraska believes there has been an explosion of units in smaller towns and cities, where training and operational standards may not be as high as large cities - a growth he attributes to "the hysteria" of the country's war on drugs.

"I get several calls a month from people asking about local incidents - wrong address raids, excessive use of force, wrongful shootings - this stuff is happening all the time," he adds.

Every wrongful death of a civilian, or criminal killing of a police officer, fuels the complex and emotive argument over the way the United States is policed.

Those who reject criticism of the use of Swat teams argue that the presence of the units actually prevents violence through the credible threat of overwhelming force.

John Gnagey, executive director of the National Tactical Officers Association, told the BBC: "What we find is that when Swat teams go out, shootings go down.

"We don't see it as escalating anything. We see it as reducing violence."

The NTOA rejects Dr Kraska's figures and says the actual number of deployments is far lower, but says there is a need for national training standards.

An NTOA study of 759 Swat team deployments across the US, found half were for warrant service and a third for incidents where suspects had barricaded themselves in a building - 50 were for hostage situations.

When criminology professor David Klinger looked at 12 years of data on Swat teams in 1998, he also found the most common reason for calling out teams was serving warrants, but that the units used deadly force during warrant service only 0.4% of the time.

Recruitment video

Last year the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) commissioned music video director JC Barros to make them a 10-minute film - To Protect and Serve - that would "get young men and women excited" about a career with the force.

More action film than recruitment video, it follows two LAPD officers who - in one day - capture a robbery suspect, are first on the scene when a gun-toting man takes a woman hostage, mediate a fight, and help to find a young kidnap victim.

Along the way they are supported by colleagues from bike patrol, K-9 dog teams, air support and, of course, the Swat team.

But Dr Kraska sees such initiatives as reflecting a changing culture of police work.

"These elite units are highly culturally appealing to certain sections of the police community. They like it, they enjoy it," he says.

"The chance to strap on a vest, grab a semi-automatic weapon and go out on a mission is for some people an exciting reason to join - even if policing as a profession can - and should - be boring for much of the time.

"The problem is that when you talk about the war on this and the war on that, and police officers see themselves as soldiers, then the civilian becomes the enemy."

An SAS soldier has refused to fight in Iraq and has left the Army over the "illegal" tactics of United States troops and the policies of coalition forces.

After three months in Baghdad, Ben Griffin told his commander that he was no longer prepared to fight alongside American forces.

He said he had witnessed "dozens of illegal acts" by US troops, claiming they viewed all Iraqis as "untermenschen" - the Nazi term for races regarded as sub-human.

The decision marks the first time an SAS soldier has refused to go into combat and quit the Army on moral grounds.

It immediately brought to an end Mr Griffin's exemplary, eight-year career in which he also served with the Parachute Regiment, taking part in operations in Northern Ireland, Macedonia and Afghanistan.

But it will also embarrass the Government and have a potentially profound impact on cases of other soldiers who have refused to fight.

On Wednesday, the pre-trial hearing will begin into the court martial of Flt Lt Malcolm Kendall-Smith, a Royal Air Force doctor who has refused to return to Iraq for a third tour of duty on the grounds that the war is illegal. Mr Griffin's allegations came as the Foreign Office minister Kim Howells, visiting Basra yesterday, admitted that Iraq was now "a mess".

Mr Griffin, 28, who spent two years with the SAS, said the American military's "gung-ho and trigger happy mentality" and tactics had completely undermined any chance of winning the hearts and minds of the Iraqi population. He added that many innocent civilians were arrested in night-time raids and interrogated by American soldiers, imprisoned in the notorious Abu Ghraib prison, or handed over to the Iraqi authorities and "most probably" tortured.

Mr Griffin eventually told SAS commanders at Hereford that he could not take part in a war which he regarded as "illegal".

He added that he now believed that the Prime Minister and the Government had repeatedly "lied" over the war's conduct.

"I did not join the British Army to conduct American foreign policy," he said. He expected to be labelled a coward and to face a court martial and imprisonment after making what "the most difficult decision of my life" last March.

Instead, he was discharged with a testimonial describing him as a "balanced, honest, loyal and determined individual who possesses the strength of character to have the courage of his convictions".

A British student secretly released after more than two years in America's notorious Guantanamo Bay terror suspect prison told last night how he had been barred from returning to the UK.

And, as Jamal "Tony" Kiyemba spoke of the systematic torture he suffered at the hands of his captors, The Mail on Sunday has learned that Home Secretary Charles Clarke personally intervened to keep him out of Britain on "national security grounds".

The 25-year-old Londoner has been returned to his country of birth, Uganda, where he is now in custody. Kiyemba was freed without warning last week as international pressure mounted on America to close the detention camp after a highly critical UN report on the treatment of prisoners there.

Last night his lawyer, Clive Stafford Smith, who specialises in human rights cases, handed this newspaper a dossier detailing the abuses his client alleges he suffered.

Kiyemba claims the Americans forced him, under torture, to confess to terrorist activities, and that MI5 interrogated him repeatedly, quizzing him about British terror suspects and the jailed clerics Abu Hamza and Abu Qatada.

The Government is refusing to reveal why Kiyemba, a Leicester University pharmacy student who grew up in London and whose mother, four brothers and sister all live in Britain, has been excluded from the country. But his lawyer believes something he was tortured into saying may hold the clue.

Richard Perle: Lessons of the Inadequate Iraq Intelligence - Bomb Iran Sooner Than Later

The steady drumbeat to a war with Iran has been building. In my opinion, military action is inevitable now, and an event I have been expecting ever since the 'Axis of Evil Speech' in 2002. Neo-con and PNAC member, Richard Pearle, who is in the business of profiteering from military conflict, made his comments to Reuters earlier this month. Speaking about what is known about Iran's Nuclear capability Perle, a former advisor on the US' Defense Policy Board Advisory Committee, said at a security conference in Munich:

"If you want to try to wait until the very last minute, you'd better be very confident of your intelligence because if you're not, you won't know when the last minute is, [.......] And so, ironically, one of the lessons of the inadequate intelligence of Iraq is you'd better be careful how long you choose to wait."

Rumsfeld Says Extremists Winning Media War

The Pentagon will not close its Guantanamo Bay prison for terrorist suspects, despite U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan's call to shut it down, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Friday.

"He's just flat wrong," Rumsfeld said in response to a question about the controversial prison during an appearance at the Council on Foreign Relations. "We shouldn't close Guantanamo. We have several hundred terrorists — bad people, people that if let back out on the field would try to kill Americans. That's just a fact."

He said closing it would amount to pretending there is no problem with a terrorist threat to U.S. interests.

Rumsfeld also took a swipe at Annan, saying, "He's never been to Guantanamo Bay," whereas representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross "stayed there, lived there 24 hours a day" to observe conditions.

"That place is being run as well as any detention facility can be run," he added, his voice rising. "It's absolutely beyond comprehension," he said, that calls for closing Guantanamo Bay can be based on allegations of mistreatment and torture by the prisoners, whom Rumsfeld said are trained to lie.

A U.N. report issued earlier this week said some of the treatment of prisoners amounted to torture.

There are about 500 prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. Many have been held for nearly four years. Most were captured on the battlefields of Afghanistan in late 2001 after U.S. forces invaded in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Rumsfeld also asserted that U.S. forces in Iraq are making progress on the security front, but he said there inevitably will be setbacks as the Iraqis struggle to assume control of their country.

"Our goal has to be to reduce our forces down, and to do it at a pace where we recognized that we're going to — I almost said 'make a mistake.' It will look like a mistake. It's a judgment call. We're going to have to pull out of some pieces of real estate and turn over things to Iraqis, and they're going to drop the ball. Let's face it.

"And we're going to have to step in, go back in and fix it and then turn it back over again, and it's going to be three steps forward and one step back. It isn't going to be perfect, it isn't going to be pretty," he said.

Rumsfeld said U.S. forces already have closed or turned over to the Iraqis 30 military bases. He offered no projections of future U.S. troop withdrawals. Last December the Pentagon said the number of U.S. troops in Iraq would drop from about 138,000 to about 130,000 by March.

Rumsfeld also said al-Qaida and other Islamic extremist groups have poisoned the Muslim public's view of the United States through deft use of the Internet and other modern communications methods that the American government has failed to master.

"Our enemies have skillfully adapted to fighting wars in today's media age, but for the most part we — our country, our government — has not adapted," he said.

He quoted Ayman al-Zawahri, the chief lieutenant of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, as saying that their terrorist network is in a media battle for the hearts and minds of Muslims. Rumsfeld agreed, saying that the battle for public opinion is at least as important as the battles on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The extremist groups are able to act quickly on the information front, with relatively few people, while the U.S. government bureaucracy has yet to keep up in an age of e-mail, blogs and instant messaging, he said.

"We in the government have barely even begun to compete in reaching their audiences," Rumsfeld said.

He said the military needs to focus more on adapting to the changes in global media.

"In some cases, military public affairs officials have had little communications training and little, if any, grounding in the importance of timing and rapid response, and the realities of digital and broadcast media," he said.

Rumsfeld's statement that the 'media war' is being lost to extremists, can alternatively be read as 'we are having a hard time concealing the truth'.

'What is quite revealing about this statement is the prior assumption that if one spends enough money on lies, one will ultimately be believed.
This is, of course, a fallacy. The US Government and mainstream media have spent incredible fortunes on their lies and propaganda. TV shows, movies, newscasts, all of these involve investments in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Yet blogs running on spare change are getting the truth out, and the reason is simple, because we ARE telling the truth, and the truth is what the people are starting to realize they must have.'

The Basra video should lay to rest a scurrilous lie

Since April 2003, the people of Basra have consistently been bemused by reports that they and their city enjoy a state of calm and stability under the command of the British forces, in contrast to the north of Iraq and the so-called Sunni triangle. As someone born and bred in Basra, I hope that the recent images of British troops beating young Basra boys to within an inch of their lives will allow such claims to be laid to rest and show a fraction of the reality that has made life throughout Iraq a living hell.

When the Abu Ghraib scandal broke a couple of years ago, I recall a commentator on the BBC World Service smugly saying that the Americans were heavy-handed and undisciplined when it came to dealing with civilians, while the British were far more restrained, touring Basra in their berets as peacekeepers rather than occupiers. My estimation of the BBC World Service dipped when the other side of the picture was not presented.

The truth is that ever since the fall of Saddam Hussein's tyrannical regime, abuses and atrocities committed against Iraqi civilians have been a regular, at times daily, occurrence throughout the country, including in Basra. These have been committed by American, British and Iraqi official forces. Hearing the British prime minister describe this latest incident as an isolated case fills me and fellow Iraqis with anger.

It adds insult to very serious injury when we are told that this humiliation, torture and violence is the work of a few "bad apples". From previous experience, the most we can look forward to is a whitewash inquiry and possibly a young, low-ranking soldier being made a scapegoat. Read whole article....

Regarding the writer's comments about his estimation of the BBC World Service dropping when he realised they were not accurately reporting the general behaviour of the British Troops and their treatment of Iraqis - it just illustrates my opinion of the mainstream media. Most people think of the BBC as being one of the more reliable, unbiased news sources. I'm of the opinion that they are just better liars.

UN calls for Guantanamo closure

UN human rights investigators have called for the immediate closure of the US detention camp at Guantanamo Bay.

A UN report on conditions in the Cuba camp says the US should try all inmates or free them "without further delay".

Some aspects of the treatment of the 500-strong camp population amount to torture, the UN team alleges.

The US has rejected the closure call, with White House spokesman Scott McClellan saying that the facility houses "dangerous terrorists".

US officials have dismissed most of the allegations as "largely without merit", saying the five investigators never actually visited Guantanamo Bay.

One of the five investigators responsible for the report, UN special rapporteur on torture Manfred Nowak, said the detention of inmates for years without charge amounted to arbitrary detention.

"Those persons either have to be released immediately or they should be brought to a proper and competent court and tried for the offences they are charged with," he told the BBC.

Yet again the US flouts international law and opinion, by subsequently rejecting the UN's report. The Pentagon's excuse is that the UN were given an opportunity to visit the camp and refused. The only problem with tthe US' offer was the stipulation that the inspectors would not be given access to the prisoners themselves. What??!! So what were they going to be shown? Were they proposing a tour of the grounds and the staff quarters?? Well, what were those inspectors thinking? They missed an opportunity to get a real insight into what goes on in Guantanamo.

While visiting and posting on various forums I have come across a mixture of views. The views that express support for Guantanamo are extremely misguided and led by the bias spin of the propaganda machine. They seem to ignore glaring obvious facts which
include:

The very location of the camps - Guantanamo Bay - Jurisdictional Limbo. Why set up the camp there unless planning illegal actions? (ie: contravening the Geneva Convention and Human Rights Laws)

No charges against the overwhelming majority of the detainees.

The invention of a new term to describe these prisoners - 'illegal combatants' so once again international laws can be bypassed

The fact that these 'illegal combatants' are not even being told what they are being held for, to me, beggars belief. We are setting the scene for the breakdown of the justice system as we know it - the ushering in of totalitarianism in the name of fighting terror.
